Momentum Arts and the Street Child World Cup

“I know from personal experience just what power football can have to inspire and change young people’s lives whatever their background or nationality. This is what the Street Child World Cup is all about and I give it my full support.” David Beckham.

Participatory arts can play a crucial role in providing life changing opportunities for young people internationally, helping them to overcome substantial hardship and live a more fulfilled life.

A quick summary.

The power of the creative arts to engage young people, help to improve their life chances and champion their human rights should not be underestimated. Our expanding international profile is seeing this work gather increasing pace.

A little more detail.

A founding member of the Street Child World Cup, we have programmed the arts strand since 2009. During the inaugural event in March 2010 8 teams of street children travelled to Durban, South Africa to take part in the tournament. When the young people were not on the pitch they engaged in our creative arts workshops, which were integral to the overall goal of ‘winning rights for street children’. Street Child United now sees us planning the second Street Child World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Some more information about our international work and the experiences of the young people who took part.

The Street Child World Cup seeks to change attitudes to, and treatment of, the estimated 100 million street children worldwide. The creative arts are pivotal to this programme which, alongside the football, provides a high profile platform to ’amplify the voices of the street children’.

The artworks, created by street children during the Durban Street Child World Cup, formed and inspired an exhibition at Durban Art Gallery. Opened by Justice Albie Sachs on South African Humans Rights Day, the exhibition consequently ran throughout the FIFA World Cup. The works went on to be included in and inpsire a subsequent exhibition at the Foundling Museum in London.

“The Street Child World Cup demonstrates the tremendous potential of every single child, and especially street children, who are so often treated as less than human. I am proud that the first ever Street Child World Cup will take place in South Africa – and I urge all governments to guarantee the rights of this most marginalised group of their citizens to lives in which their promise is fulfilled.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

In Spring 2014 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will play host to the second Street Child World Cup. Building on the success of the inaugural event in Durban, South Africa in 2010, the 2014 event will bring teams of street children from 20 countries to compete for the Street Child World Cup and to make their voices heard.

Street Child United (charity number pending) has been established as a Joint Venture by Amos Trust, Action for Brazil’s Children’s Trust and Momentum Arts to deliver the 2014 Street Child World Cup and to ensure that this event is as effective as possible in transforming the lives of street Children around the world.
