 Embrace

We believe that participation in creative and cultural activities can have a significant impact on the lives of young people and their communities. In partnership with Cambridgeshire Locality Teams in East Cambridgeshire and Fenland and funded by Cambridgeshire County Council, Momentum Arts are delivering Embrace the Arts, a cultural programme using creative learning. The 2009-2010 programme comprises of three strands including the creation of a strategic cultural consortium to champion culture, a tailored training programme for youth workers (to promote confidence and creative skills) and creative arts projects for young people aged (13-19 years) which contribute to the Every Child Matters outcomes.

News: Graffiti project is ‘off the wall’ for young people in Soham

Ten young people joined Momentum Arts and youth workers from Connexions to take part in a graffiti project during October half-term in Soham at The Lode Youth and Community Centre.

The graffiti project, entitled ‘Off the Wall’ was developed in response to young people’s comments following a taster session which was held in the summer.

Tom Fell, youth worker, explains: “Over the summer we offered a series of 'taster' sessions for young people in a range of activities - sort of 'try before you buy'. Graffiti sessions were just so popular with young people that when we started to look at how to involve more young people in the Arts Award we decided to develop a short course in graffiti art to get them started.''

‘Off the Wall’ was run by Momentum Arts in partnership with Connexions. Momentum Arts has been awarded one of Cambridgeshire County Council’s contracts to deliver arts and culture activities for young people in East Cambridgeshire and Fenland. It was promoted by Connexions and also widely publicised in the run up to the holidays through Soham Village College, with the aim of bringing a new arts and culture experience to the young people taking part.

Over three days the young people had plenty of opportunity to take part in creative workshops and get to grips with graffiti, with top tips from professional graffiti artist Josh Peacock, as well as helping to create several murals for the youth centre.

Brittini Mann-Smith, 15, from Soham, took part in Off the Wall. She commented: “I've never tried graffiti art before - it's not easy. I really enjoyed working with Josh, because he spent time showing us loads of ways to get things just right and he let us work on our own piece for the youth centre."

The sessions also introduced young people to the Bronze Arts Award, and Arts Advisers were on hand to help individuals start to explore how they view art and research their arts heros and heroines.
