CLiP, a consortium of East of England arts and further education agencies, provides alternative ways of learning to re-engage learners using creative and performing arts and visual media. Working in partnership with Fenland and Peterborough mainstream schools and local partners, the programme delivers work based learning for young people (14-16 years) deemed at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) . Funded by the Learning Skills Council and European Fund, these short, intensive courses focus on developing employability skills, re-engaging learners in education and, in doing so, provide inspiration for positive career choices including those within the creative industries.

In 2008 CLiP engaged with 185 young NEET and at risk of NEET learners and in 2009/2010 will engage with 350 at risk of NEET learners of which 40% will achieve a qualification and progression opportunity and it is expected that over 50% will progress into education, employment or training.

Momentum Arts, through the CLIP programme, engaged around 40 Year 11 leavers with the Fenland and Peterborough U Projects at Grafham Water in August 2009.  As well as taking part in an action packed programme of water sports and activities they also did creative activities including graffiti and photography and created comic strip and photographic diaries of their experience.

Damian – Case Study

Damian participated in one of the early CLiP workshops after being referred to us by his local Connexions officer as being NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training). Damian, working with a group of young people and artists, produced a short film entitled Flat Out which told the story of an ill fated road trip around the Fens. Damian worked to story board, write and star in the film and also identified suitable film locations around Wisbech. Over the course of the three days it became apparent that Damian had both an interest in, and a talent for, photography. Damian’s interest in photography was nurtured and encouraged and fed into his successful completion of the Bronze Arts Award.

africa At the end of the three day project the film was show cased to an audience made up of parents, relatives, friends and Connexions officers. Damian attended the event ‘in character’ and took questions from the audience.

Following on from this initial project Damian attended further workshops and championed the Arts Award to other participants. He also took part in one of the progression pathways in Peterborough where his love of photography fed into the creation of another short film.

Damian, now 19, was supported by Momentum Arts through his application on to the Platform 2 volunteering programme. His successful application saw him travel to South Africa where he worked on a nature reserve building ‘hides’ with a group of young people from South Africa and around the UK. He documented his experience with photos which he has since presented at Momentum Arts training days.

When asked if the trip to South Africa had changed him Damian said:

‘It made me realise how much we have in this country and that we shouldn’t take things for granted. The people that I stayed with didn’t have much but they shared everything they had with us’.

Damian has now decided to go back into education and is due to start a photography course at his local college.
